One of Rotary Foundation most important aims over the next 5 years is to improve Health in the Developing World and in particular reduce infant mortality. Some 500 mothers die each day because of perinatal complications.
Bideford Bridge Rotary Club have learned that many of these deaths are due to the lack of facilities and they believe that improving the provision of such equipment is the quickest and most cost effective way of addressing these problems
As a first step we have identified 15 hospitals in the developing world in urgent need of this equipment and are asking clubs to initiate a club project to twin with a club near these hospitals and to endeavour to provide at least one system. Our belief is that over 1000 lives per year and much suffering could be saved in this way.
It is not just a case of money as anaesthesia equipment is being provided but up to 70% of equipment provided does not work in the conditions found in Developing countries. Equipment does exist that is effective. The greater challenge is to ensure that future donations and grants provide the right equipment which happens to be less expensive
